Tim Burton struggled to find his Charlie Bucket. The studio wanted Charlie Bucket to be a brilliant kid, but Burton argued that the boy should be average, someone innocent that doesn't get in trouble.
Johnny Depp had worked with Highmore in "Finding Neverland."
Depp urged Burton to meet Highmore. For his part, Highmore had read the book but had not seen the movie. He chose not to watch it so it wouldn't influence is portrayal of Charlie.
He has lent his voice for films like "The Golden Compass" and "A Fox's Tale."
He's also appeared in films like "A Good Year" with Russell Crowe and "August Rush" with Dennis Quaid.
The Brit's favourite actor is Johnny Depp so it was a treat for him to work with the Hollywood star twice.
"When I left the set of Finding Neverland, I was quite upset, because I thought I wouldn't see Johnny again," Highmore admits. "And Charlie wants to go back to the chocolate factory. We both got our wishes."
Winter studied drama weekly in England where she grew up before being cast as Veruca Salt.
